Car camping gives you room for comfort, but the trunk still has edges. Start with the cargo opening and the longest packed item, rather than buying everything and hoping it will fit.
1. Measure the opening, then the floor
Write down the narrowest width and height of your hatch or trunk opening. Inside, measure the usable floor length and width with the seats in the position you will actually travel in. Note wheel wells, sloped seat backs and the space needed to close the lid.
A box may fit the cargo floor and still be awkward to pass through the opening. Test a cardboard outline before committing to a rigid piece.
2. Find the longest packed piece
Open dimensions tell you very little about loading. Compare the folded or packed measurements in the product details. Longpause, for example, lists a 37.40 × 6.30 in packed size. That long dimension needs a clear lane in the car.
If a page gives shipping-package dimensions, treat them as a package reference, not a promise of the exact folded shape. Ask us about any missing measurement before ordering.
3. Give rigid gear a base layer
Place heavier boxes low and secure them so they cannot slide. Avoid stacking a hard box on top of a fabric pad or tent. Keep the driver’s view clear, follow your vehicle’s load limits and leave passenger space free of loose gear.
4. Pack in the order you will unpack
Keep your shelter, stakes and first chair easy to reach. Sleep gear can sit farther in if you will pitch the tent first. Put small parts in their own bags and keep each item’s components together.
5. Leave a lane for the trip home
Gear rarely folds exactly as neatly at the campsite as it did at home. Leave a little room around soft items, and separate damp gear until it can dry. A tight load that requires perfect packing every time makes the last morning harder than it needs to be.
